my trip to the 2019 rtr

The conversion of my van has been a slow-going process, primarily because the weekly videos on YouTube and the other social media are taking too much time away from the conversion.

But that was all part of the planning as I had decided that 2020 should be the year that I move into the van on a permanent basis. Currently I use my van as a daily vehicle and regularly use it to spend a weekend boondocking. With the new van, that was usually very local, as it was still an empty van; with progress of the van build, the trips have exceedingly become longer and further away from the home.

I’ll be heading to the RTR in the Quartzsite area of Arizona and there is the opportunity for all of you to meet me and look at the current state of the van build.
I’ll try to be there during the entire RTR, which is held between January 9th and 20th. But you may be able to meetup with me on my way there or back from Central Florida. I mainly drive the I-10 corridor to the event and the I-40 on return. Continue reading Subscriber Meetup

Kitchen Cabinet Assembly

I’m continuing with the kitchen cabinet assembly in the RV. It’s mostly gluing the separate parts together, but I sometimes use screws, allowing me to access hidden parts of the kitchen cabinet. After another fit in the cargo van, I outline the location for the induction cooktop, but that’s for next time. Continue reading Kitchen Cabinet Assembly

Murphy Bed Installation

A fold-up Murphy bed for a van is the ultimate space saver and a little effort can create a unique furniture piece.

Thinking About Safety & More

Safety comes in different packages and I start with a fire extinguisher in the RV/Cargo Van.

rv deckfillI just installed a general purpose extinguisher next to the driver’s seat and will add another one at a later time, either in the kitchen or at the sliding side door of my Ford Transit. But these are not the only safety precautions I’ll take; I’ll add a seat belt cutter/window breaker and fire/carbon monoxide alarm. Continue reading Thinking About Safety & More

Deckfill Testing & Murphy Bed Magnets

Replacing the leaking fill dish of the fresh water tank in the RV with a marine type deckfill and testing if it works.

In addition, I worked on my small oil painting as a simple interior decorating idea for the RV and I placed multiple N52 Neodymium magnets into the legs of the Murphy bed, to keep them in place while driving.

Ceiling Insulation & Art Work

Got a good start with the ceiling insulation of the van and continued work on the oil painting that will brighten up the van.

The insulation consists of three layers of 1/2 inch Poly-Iso with an R-value of close to 10. I would prefer a fourth layer that also covers the ceiling cross-members, but height restrictions in the Medium High roof Ford Transit van, prevent me from doing that.
The purpose of the art work is mainly to add some color to the mainly white interior. Continue reading Ceiling Insulation & Art Work

Mondriaan Oil Painting

mondriaanThis is an update from what I’ve been doing the last few days. I’m working on the final install of the Murphy bed in the Ford Transit van and like always, I’m doing several small projects at the same time.

Part of the Murphy bed, I choose a Mondriaan to add some color to the mostly white interior design of the van. The simplicity of making, modern design and bright colors were all factors when I chose this setup. Continue reading Make Your Own Interior Decor
